About this session

Professional relationships become stronger when people feel heard, understood, and treated as though their perspective matters — even when agreement is not possible.

Yet empathy can be difficult when workloads are high, viewpoints conflict, communication styles differ, or another person's behavior initially makes little sense.

Participants learn to move beyond assumptions and become more accurate about what another person may be experiencing.

They practice perspective-taking, listening for meaning rather than simply words, recognizing emotional and contextual cues, asking better questions, and validating another person's experience without automatically agreeing with their conclusion.

The session also addresses the limits of empathy. Participants learn to maintain boundaries, avoid taking responsibility for every emotion around them, challenge respectfully when necessary, and turn understanding into useful action.

The goal is practical empathy that strengthens professional relationships rather than emotional over-identification.

What’s covered

Understand Empathy as a Professional Skill

Every length
  • Empathy is not agreementUnderstanding why someone sees a situation differently does not require accepting their interpretation, changing the decision, or believing their preferred solution is correct.
  • Use different forms of empathyPerspective-taking helps us understand how another person may see the situation.
  • Notice your empathy gapsEmpathy can become harder when somebody communicates differently, repeatedly frustrates us, holds opposing priorities, or reminds us of a previous difficult experience.
  • Move from judgment to curiosityDescriptions such as difficult, unmotivated, defensive, controlling, or unreasonable can close down investigation before the context is understood.

Listen & Understand More Accurately

90 minutes and longer
  • Listen for meaning, not just wordsPeople communicate through priorities, emphasis, hesitation, repetition, tone, questions, and what they choose not to elaborate on as well as through their literal words.
  • Ask questions that open the perspectiveUseful empathy questions help reveal how the situation looks from the other person's position rather than steering them toward the listener's preferred explanation.
  • Reflect & check your understandingAssuming we understand someone can be less empathic than checking whether our interpretation is accurate.
  • Notice context around the personBehavior is shaped by workload, role, culture, incentives, authority, previous experiences, information, relationships, and organizational conditions.

Respond With Empathy & Boundaries

3 hours and longer
  • Validate without automatically agreeingValidation communicates that another person's perspective or emotional reaction has been heard and makes sense from where they are standing.
  • Match the response to the needSomeone may need to be heard, receive information, solve a problem, clarify expectations, get practical support, or simply have time to process.
  • Keep professional boundariesEmpathy does not require absorbing another person's emotion, solving every difficulty, or accepting behavior that crosses appropriate boundaries.
  • Be honest when the answer is still noSome of the most useful empathy appears when a request cannot be granted, a deadline cannot move, feedback must still be given, or a difficult decision remains unchanged.

Use Empathy to Strengthen Relationships

Full day only
  • Build trust through everyday interactionsEmpathy becomes credible through repeated behavior: remembering context, following up, listening when it matters, adapting appropriately, and showing that another person's perspective influenced the interaction.
  • Use empathy during disagreementUnderstanding the logic behind another person's position can improve disagreement without requiring either side to abandon its own perspective.
  • Repair relationships after frictionMisunderstandings, poor tone, missed expectations, or insensitive responses can damage trust even when no harm was intended.
  • Turn empathy into actionUnderstanding another person's needs has limited value if nothing changes when an appropriate response is available.
