About this session
Energy drinks can look deceptively simple. Pick up a can and the front may promise energy, focus, performance or endurance.
Turn it around and the picture becomes more complicated: different serving sizes, caffeine from several sources, sugar or sweeteners, vitamins, amino acids, plant extracts and ingredient combinations that vary substantially from one product to another.
That matters because an 'energy drink' is not one standardized dose. A small can and a large resealable bottle can provide very different amounts of caffeine, and some containers contain more than one labelled serving.
A sugar-free product can still contain a substantial stimulant load, while an ingredient such as guarana may contribute additional caffeine even when consumers are focusing only on the number printed next to the word caffeine.
Energy Drinks: What Are You Actually Drinking? turns the label into a practical decision tool.
Participants learn to calculate what the whole container provides, distinguish caffeine from sugar and other ingredients, question performance claims and add energy drinks to the caffeine they have already consumed from coffee, tea, cola, pre-workout products or other sources.
The longer formats move beyond the label into the pattern around the drink.
Participants identify why they reach for energy drinks, examine timing and sleep, build alternatives for different types of low energy, recognize higher-risk combinations and create a personal Energy Drink Decision System.
The aim is not to tell adults they can never drink an energy drink. It is to make the choice informed, deliberate and proportionate to the problem they are actually trying to solve.

- Question vitamin, focus, endurance and performance claims more critically
- Add energy drinks to caffeine already consumed through coffee, tea, cola, pre-workout and other products
- Recognize when several stimulant products are being stacked across one working day
- Identify whether low energy is actually sleepiness, hunger, dehydration, mental fatigue, boredom or physical exhaustion

- Separate sugar from stimulationParticipants compare regular and sugar-free products and learn that sugar content and caffeine content are separate decisions.
- Question the extra ingredients & claimsEnergy drinks may contain taurine, B vitamins, amino acids, herbal extracts and other compounds.

90 minutes and longer- Understand what caffeine can — and cannot — doCaffeine can temporarily reduce the sensation of sleep pressure and increase alertness.
- Map the energy drink into the rest of the dayParticipants place the energy drink onto a timeline containing coffee, tea, pre-workout, meals, exercise, demanding work and intended sleep.
- Recognize product stackingAn energy drink may be only one part of a stimulant-heavy day.
- Understand the alcohol + energy drink problemCaffeine may make someone feel less sleepy while alcohol-related impairment remains.
Work Out What the Low Energy Actually Needs
3 hours and longer- Distinguish sleepiness from other forms of low energyParticipants examine whether the immediate problem is genuine sleepiness, hunger, dehydration, prolonged concentration, boredom, stress or physical fatigue.
- Build a rapid energy reset menuParticipants build realistic alternatives involving water, food, movement, daylight, fresh air, task variation, a genuine break or appropriate rest.
- Plan high-demand days before fatigue hitsDeadlines, long meetings, travel, events, examinations, physical work and unusual schedules can make stimulant use expand reactively.
- Recognize when the drink is the wrong toolSevere sleepiness, illness, significant heat stress, repeated microsleeps, marked exhaustion or concerning physical symptoms are not framed as situations that should be solved by stronger stimulation.
Recognize Higher-Risk Patterns & Build Safer Boundaries
Full day only- Notice when use is becoming automaticParticipants examine whether an energy drink is being chosen deliberately or has become attached automatically to commuting, afternoon work, night study, gym visits or the beginning of a shift.
- Understand tolerance & withdrawalRegular caffeine use can change the effect a person notices over time.
- Take physical symptoms seriouslyPalpitations, marked tremor, worsening anxiety, significant insomnia, dizziness, recurrent headaches or other concerning symptoms should not be interpreted as proof that the product is working effectively.
- Build the personal Energy Drink Decision systemParticipants combine label literacy, total-caffeine awareness, timing, purpose, alternative responses and personal warning signs into one repeatable decision process.
