About this session
Groups create their own emotional patterns. Some people speak early and often, others wait. Certain voices carry more weight. Tension can spread quickly, silence can be misread and one person's frustration can influence the mood of the whole room.
This session helps participants use emotional intelligence to understand those dynamics more accurately.
They learn to notice how emotion, status, trust, communication style and group norms affect participation, decision-making and relationships without reducing everything to personality.
Participants then practice responding more constructively to dominant voices, silence, disagreement and changing group mood. The final module focuses on building group habits that support clearer communication, broader participation and stronger trust over time.
The aim is not to eliminate friction or make every group harmonious. It is to understand the dynamics well enough to work with them deliberately.

What’s covered
Read the Group More Accurately
Every length- Notice the emotional tone of the groupParticipants identify the overall emotional tone in a group, such as energy, tension, hesitation, frustration or enthusiasm, and examine how it may be influencing participation and behavior.
- Map recurring interaction patternsParticipants identify patterns such as the same people speaking first, ideas being ignored until repeated by someone else or difficult topics being avoided.
- Distinguish silence from agreementParticipants challenge the assumption that quiet means people agree, understand or have nothing to add.
- Separate people from the patternParticipants practice describing group dynamics without labeling individuals as 'difficult,' 'dominant' or 'disengaged.' They focus on the interaction pattern and its impact so the group has more options for changing what happens next.
Understand Participation and Influence
90 minutes and longer- Notice who gets heardParticipants examine whose ideas attract attention, whose contributions are interrupted or overlooked and who tends to influence direction even without formal authority.
- Understand informal influenceParticipants identify how expertise, confidence, relationships, tenure and status can influence the group beyond the formal hierarchy.
- Widen participation without forcing itParticipants practice techniques such as deliberate pauses, round-robin input, written reflection or asking for alternative views.
- Check who is carrying the groupParticipants identify whether a small number of people repeatedly do the emotional, relational or coordination work needed to keep the group functioning.
Manage Tension and Emotional Contagion
3 hours and longer- Notice when emotion starts spreadingParticipants identify how one person's frustration, anxiety or defensiveness can shift the tone of a whole group.
- Slow the group down when neededParticipants practice using a pause, summary or clarifying question when discussion becomes rushed, defensive or circular.
- Keep disagreement on the issueParticipants practice separating disagreement about ideas, priorities or decisions from judgments about the people involved.
- Reset after a difficult group momentParticipants identify what helps a group recover after tension, such as clarifying what was decided, acknowledging unresolved concerns or resetting expectations.
Build Healthier Group Habits
Full day only- Create norms that make participation easierParticipants identify simple group norms around interruption, preparation, challenge, decision-making and follow-through that make participation more predictable.
- Make dissent a normal part of discussionParticipants practice inviting alternative views before decisions are finalized and separating disagreement from disloyalty or negativity.
- Build trust through follow-throughParticipants identify how reliability, clear ownership and visible follow-through affect group trust.
- Review the dynamic, not just the taskParticipants create a short team reflection covering what helped participation, where tension appeared and what the group should repeat or change next time.
