About this session

Feedback is most useful when it provides information somebody can act on. Yet workplace feedback often becomes vague praise, delayed criticism, personality judgment, or a collection of comments with no clear next step.

Participants learn to build feedback around observable behavior, relevant context, impact, and what would help going forward.

They practice choosing the right moment, adapting the conversation to the relationship and situation, inviting the other person's perspective, and staying clear when the message is difficult.

Receiving feedback requires a different set of skills. Participants learn to manage the first emotional reaction, clarify what the other person actually means, distinguish useful information from opinion, identify patterns across feedback, and decide what deserves action.

The goal is a healthier feedback relationship in which people can speak honestly, listen intelligently, and improve without treating every feedback conversation as a verdict on personal worth.

What your people take away

  • Give feedback that is specific, evidence-based, timely, and actionable
  • Separate observable behavior from assumptions about personality, intent, or motivation
  • Handle feedback conversations that involve disagreement, emotion, or difficult messages
  • Receive feedback without becoming automatically defensive or automatically agreeing
  • Convert useful feedback into behavioral experiments, actions, and follow-through
  • Build stronger peer, upward, and team feedback habits into everyday work

What’s covered

Give Feedback People Can Actually Use

Every length
  • Start with purposeUseful feedback has a reason: reinforce something effective, improve an outcome, address a problem, strengthen a skill, or prevent an issue from recurring.
  • Describe behavior, not characterStatements such as 'you're careless', 'you're not strategic', or 'you're difficult' provide little information about what actually happened.
  • Connect behavior to impactFeedback becomes more meaningful when the recipient understands why the behavior matters.
  • Make the next step clearFeedback that ends with the problem can leave the recipient unsure what improvement looks like.

Have the Feedback Conversation Well

90 minutes and longer
  • Choose the right moment & settingFeedback loses value when delivered so late that the details have disappeared or so reactively that neither person can think clearly.
  • Make it a conversationA feedback conversation should create understanding, not simply deliver a speech.
  • Handle defensiveness & disagreementA difficult reaction does not automatically mean the feedback should be withdrawn, and disagreement does not automatically mean the recipient is refusing to learn.
  • Keep difficult feedback respectful & clearTrying so hard to protect someone's feelings that the message becomes impossible to understand is not necessarily kind or useful.

Receive Feedback With Openness & Judgment

3 hours and longer
  • Manage the first reactionUnexpected feedback can trigger defensiveness, embarrassment, frustration, or an immediate urge to explain.
  • Ask for specificityFeedback such as 'be more confident', 'communicate better', or 'show more leadership' is difficult to act on without examples.
  • Evaluate the feedbackReceiving feedback well does not require accepting every comment as objectively correct.
  • Turn insight into experimentationUseful feedback becomes development when something changes in behavior.

Build Feedback Into Everyday Working Relationships

Full day only
  • Ask for feedback before you need itFeedback becomes less threatening when it is part of normal work rather than appearing only after something has gone wrong.
  • Use peer & upward feedbackUseful workplace insight does not flow only from manager to employee.
  • Follow up after the conversationFeedback loses credibility when concerns are raised repeatedly without checking progress or when improvements happen but are never acknowledged.
  • Create healthier feedback normsTeams build stronger feedback cultures when useful feedback is timely, specific, two-way, proportionate, and connected to development rather than blame.
