About this session

Making money work harder is not about chasing the highest return available. Different money has different jobs.

Money needed for an upcoming expense may need stability and easy access, while money linked to a goal many years away may have more time to tolerate fluctuations and potentially participate in investment growth.

The useful starting point is therefore not 'What should I invest in?' but 'What is this money for, when might I need it and what risks can it reasonably be exposed to?'

This session helps participants build that decision framework.

They examine the role of cash, saving and investing, see how inflation and time can affect purchasing power, explore how compound growth and regular contributions work and learn why time horizon matters when investment values move.

They then build a practical understanding of risk, diversification, asset classes, concentration and fees without being directed toward a particular security, fund or portfolio.

The final stage turns those principles into a repeatable financial system.

Participants identify where automation could make long-term plans easier to maintain, establish sensible review points and examine the behaviors that can undermine otherwise sound plans — including chasing recent performance, reacting emotionally to volatility or being drawn toward unrealistic return claims.

They leave with a personal Money at Work Plan based on purpose, time, risk, cost and consistency rather than predictions about the market.

What’s covered

Decide What Your Money Needs to Do

Every length
  • Give different money different jobsParticipants identify the different jobs money needs to perform across everyday spending, financial safety, planned purchases and longer-term growth.
  • Match the job to the time horizonParticipants connect each goal to an approximate time horizon and consider how soon the money might need to be available.
  • Protect the foundation before adding more riskParticipants examine whether money already has near-term responsibilities such as essential spending, emergency resilience or expensive debt commitments before assuming every available amount should be invested.
  • Understand the cost of doing nothingParticipants explore how inflation can reduce purchasing power over time and why holding all long-term money in cash can also involve risk.

Put Time & Compounding to Work

90 minutes and longer
  • See how compounding actually worksParticipants examine the difference between earning a return only on the original amount and earning future returns on previously accumulated growth.
  • Understand why contributions matter as much as headlinesParticipants compare scenarios where the contribution amount, contribution frequency and starting time change while assumed market performance is held constant.
  • Reinvest growth with intentionParticipants understand how reinvesting interest, dividends or other distributions can contribute to compound growth where appropriate.
  • Use time without pretending time removes riskParticipants learn why a longer investment horizon can provide more opportunity to experience different market cycles but does not guarantee a profit or eliminate loss.

Build Growth Without Chasing Returns

3 hours and longer
  • Connect potential return to the risk takenParticipants explore the principle that investments offering greater growth potential can also expose the investor to greater uncertainty, volatility or loss.
  • Understand the job of different asset classesParticipants receive a high-level introduction to common asset categories such as cash, bonds, equities and real assets and examine how they can respond differently to economic and market conditions.
  • Use diversification to reduce reliance on one outcomeParticipants identify concentration across one company, sector, geography, investment theme or asset type and examine why spreading exposure can reduce dependence on a single result.
  • Notice the costs that compound tooParticipants examine how recurring investment-management fees, platform or account charges, trading costs, advisory fees and other forms of financial friction can reduce the amount left to compound over time.

Turn Investing Into a Repeatable Money System

Full day only
  • Automate the behavior you want to keepParticipants identify where automatic transfers or contributions could make a chosen saving or investing behavior more consistent.
  • Review the plan without watching it every dayParticipants establish purposeful review points based on goals and life changes rather than reacting to every market movement.
  • Build rules for when markets get noisyParticipants examine common behaviors such as panic selling after a fall, buying after a sharp rise, following social-media tips or abandoning a long-term plan because of short-term headlines.
  • Create your money at Work PlanParticipants bring the session together by selecting practical next actions across purpose, contributions, automation, diversification, fees and review.
