About this session
Loneliness can exist even in busy workplaces, large teams or highly social environments.
For some men, relationships may become narrower over time as work, family responsibilities, relocation or major life changes reduce the time and opportunity available for meaningful connection.
Work can play an important role in social wellbeing, but simply increasing meetings, social events or office attendance does not automatically create belonging.
The quality of relationships, psychological safety, shared experience and opportunities for genuine conversation matter more than the number of people someone interacts with.
This session explores loneliness without framing it as a personal failure or something that can be solved by telling people to "socialize more." Attendees examine how connection develops, what can make it difficult for men to reach out and how everyday workplace relationships can become more meaningful and supportive.

What’s covered
Understand Loneliness and Disconnection
Every length- What loneliness actually meansThe session begins by distinguishing loneliness from being alone and from objective social isolation.

- Notice the impact on work and wellbeingLoneliness is explored in relation to motivation, confidence, mood, concentration and willingness to participate socially.
Understand the Barriers to Connection
90 minutes and longer- Masculinity and self-relianceThis section explores how expectations around independence, toughness and handling problems privately can shape male relationships.
- Friendships built around activityThe session looks at how many male relationships are maintained through shared activities, sport, work or hobbies rather than frequent direct discussion of feelings.
- Vulnerability without oversharingThe group considers how trust often develops through gradually sharing more authentic information rather than immediately having intensely personal conversations.
- The fear of making the first moveConcerns about rejection, awkwardness, seeming needy or discovering that a friendship is less close than expected are brought into the discussion.
Build More Meaningful Workplace Relationships

- Create repeated opportunities for connectionAttention turns to why relationships generally develop through repeated contact rather than one-off team-building events.
- Include without forcingThe group explores the difference between making participation possible and creating pressure to attend every social activity.
- Strengthen connection across hybrid teamsRemote and hybrid working are examined for both the flexibility they provide and the informal interactions they can remove.
Create a Workplace Where Belonging Can Grow

- Notice who may be on the edgeThe session explores how team dynamics can unintentionally leave newer employees, remote colleagues, quieter team members or people experiencing major life transitions less connected.
