About this session

Migraine is a neurological condition that can involve head pain, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, visual or sensory changes, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

An attack can affect someone before the headache begins and continue to affect energy and thinking after the pain has eased. Attacks commonly last from several hours to several days.

This session helps participants identify how migraine affects them at work and what may make attacks more likely or harder to manage.

They map possible patterns involving sleep, missed meals, dehydration, stress, screens, lighting, noise, scent, hormonal changes and working conditions without assuming that every attack has one clear trigger.

Participants then create a practical workplace plan covering early warning signs, treatment access, communication, environmental adjustments and recovery.

The session supports greater confidence without expecting employees to work through disabling symptoms or diagnose migraine from headache symptoms alone.

What’s covered

Build Your Migraine-at-Work Plan

Every length
  • Recognize your early warning signsParticipants identify symptoms that may appear before or during an attack, such as tiredness, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, neck discomfort, visual disturbance, nausea or sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Prepare an early-response routineParticipants build a practical sequence covering prescribed or professionally recommended treatment, access to water and food, reduction of light and noise and communication with an appropriate colleague.
  • Keep essential items accessibleParticipants review whether medication, water, food, tinted lenses, ear protection, cold packs or other personally useful items are genuinely available during meetings, travel, shifts or off-site work.
  • Decide how to communicate during an attackParticipants practice concise language for explaining that migraine symptoms are affecting their ability to continue a task, attend a meeting, drive or remain in a particular environment.

Identify Patterns and Reduce Workplace Strain

90 minutes and longer
  • Track patterns without blaming one triggerParticipants record timing, symptoms, sleep, meals, hydration, stress, hormonal patterns, environment and treatment response.
  • Review light, screens, noise and scentParticipants identify environmental conditions that may increase discomfort or make an attack harder to manage, including glare, flicker, strong lighting, prolonged screen use, noise and fragrance.
  • Protect meals, hydration and recoveryParticipants map where long meetings, shift work, travel or intense deadlines lead to missed meals, inadequate hydration or shortened sleep.
  • Design a more supportive working patternParticipants consider flexible start times, fewer back-to-back meetings, short screen breaks, written follow-up, access to a quieter space and temporary changes in task demand.

Navigate Treatment, Recovery and Longer-Term Support

3 hours and longer
  • Distinguish migraine from an ordinary headacheThe facilitator explains that migraine can involve neurological and whole-body symptoms in addition to head pain, while other headache disorders may require different assessment and management.
  • Prepare for a useful clinical reviewParticipants organize information about attack frequency, duration, symptoms, possible aura, medication use, missed work and recovery.
  • Recover without rushing straight back to full capacityParticipants explore the post-attack period, when fatigue, slowed thinking, sensitivity or reduced concentration may continue after pain improves.
  • Recognize symptoms that need prompt assessmentParticipants identify sudden or unusually severe headache, new neurological symptoms, persistent weakness, confusion, collapse, fever, head injury or a major change from their usual pattern as reasons for urgent medical assessment.
