About this session

A heart condition can affect work in very different ways.

One employee may return after surgery or a cardiac event, another may be managing an ongoing condition, and someone else may appear well while dealing with fatigue, medication effects, medical appointments or anxiety about symptoms recurring at work.

Managers often want to help but may feel unsure about what to ask, what information they need and whether mentioning the condition will feel intrusive.

This uncertainty can lead to avoiding the conversation altogether, becoming overly protective or making decisions about the employee's capabilities without involving them.

This practical session helps managers and colleagues respond with empathy while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

It covers confidential conversations, individual needs, workload and schedule adjustments, communication with the wider team and coordination with HR or occupational health where appropriate.

The session does not teach managers to assess whether someone is medically fit for work. Clinical decisions, cardiac rehabilitation and return-to-work recommendations remain with the employee and the appropriate healthcare or occupational-health professionals.

Cardiac rehabilitation can support recovery and return to everyday life, while the timing and nature of returning to work vary according to the person's health and the demands of their role.
