About this session

Fatigue is more than feeling tired after a busy day. It can involve reduced physical or mental energy, difficulty concentrating, slower recovery after activity and a sense that ordinary tasks now require much more effort.

There is no single cause. Fatigue may be connected to a physical or mental health condition, treatment or medication, poor sleep, pain, pregnancy, menopause, caring responsibilities, shift work or prolonged workplace demands.

In some cases, the cause may still be under investigation.

This uncertainty can make workplace conversations difficult. Managers may worry about overstepping, while employees may fear being considered unreliable, less capable or unsuitable for future opportunities.

Some people conceal the extent of their fatigue and use most of their available energy to appear well during working hours.

This practical session helps managers focus on the impact of fatigue at work rather than trying to diagnose its cause.

It covers supportive conversations, workload and scheduling, concentration, physical demands, safety-sensitive work, fluctuating capacity, privacy and appropriate involvement from HR or occupational health.

Persistent or unexplained fatigue can sometimes indicate an underlying health concern and should not simply be attributed to motivation or lifestyle. Appropriate medical assessment depends on the individual and the accompanying symptoms.

What’s covered

Understand the Employee's Experience

Every length
  • Recognize that fatigue is not lazinessAn employee may be completing fewer tasks because each activity requires more effort, not because their motivation or commitment has changed.
  • Focus on work impact, not medical proofManagers do not need to establish the cause of fatigue before discussing how work is being affected.
  • Open the conversation without oversteppingA useful conversation might begin with an observable change, such as reduced concentration, difficulty sustaining long meetings or repeated exhaustion after travel.
  • Respect what the employee chooses to shareSome employees will have a diagnosis, while others may still be undergoing tests or may not want to disclose the cause.

Reduce Avoidable Energy Demands

90 minutes and longer
  • Review workload as well as hoursReducing working hours may not help if the employee is expected to complete the same workload in less time.
  • Create space between demanding tasksBack-to-back meetings, prolonged concentration, frequent interruptions and rapid task-switching can use significant mental energy.
  • Consider physical and environmental demandsStanding, lifting, walking long distances, commuting, travel, heat, noise and unsuitable workstations may increase fatigue.
  • Use breaks without creating stigmaShort, planned breaks may help an employee sustain useful work more effectively than pushing until they become exhausted.

Support Fluctuating Capacity Safely

3 hours and longer
  • Plan for better and more difficult daysFatigue may vary from one day to another, and a good day does not necessarily mean the problem has resolved.
  • Protect safety-critical workFatigue can affect attention, reaction time and judgment, which may create additional risk in driving, machinery operation, clinical work or other safety-sensitive roles.
  • Review support regularlyAn arrangement that helps initially may need to change as symptoms, treatment or the role develops.
  • Involve specialist support appropriatelyOccupational health can help connect an employee's health needs with the practical demands of their role, while HR may support workplace processes and adjustments.
