About this session
Returning to work after an extended absence can involve much more than simply restarting where someone left off.
Workloads may have changed, confidence may be lower, relationships may need rebuilding and the person returning may be managing health, caregiving or personal circumstances that colleagues do not fully understand.
This session helps managers and teams create a more thoughtful return-to-work experience.
Participants learn how to prepare before the return, clarify what the employee needs to know, agree realistic priorities and avoid overwhelming the person with accumulated work or unnecessary questions.
The session also covers check-ins, privacy, temporary adjustments, workload progression and how to respond when the return is not going as expected.
The final module focuses on sustainable reintegration: gradually rebuilding confidence, reviewing support and creating a clear plan that balances inclusion, accountability and wellbeing.

What’s covered
Prepare for a Better Return
Every length- Plan before the first day backParticipants identify what needs to be ready before the employee returns, including access, workload, key updates, responsibilities and any agreed support.
- Clarify what has changedParticipants identify the most important changes in people, priorities, processes or responsibilities during the absence and decide what the returning employee genuinely needs to know first rather than delivering every update at once.
- Agree what the team needs to knowParticipants distinguish necessary operational information from private personal or health details.
- Set realistic initial prioritiesParticipants choose the responsibilities that matter most during the first stage of the return and separate them from work that can wait.
Support the First Weeks Back
90 minutes and longer- Pace the workload deliberatelyParticipants identify how responsibilities can be reintroduced in a manageable sequence rather than assuming immediate full capacity.
- Make expectations clearParticipants practice explaining current priorities, decision rights, deadlines and what good performance looks like during the return period.
- Use check-ins with a purposeParticipants structure short check-ins around workload, clarity, practical support and agreed actions rather than repeatedly asking for personal health updates.
- Avoid both overload and overprotectionParticipants recognize the two extremes of giving too much too quickly or removing meaningful responsibility for too long.
Communicate and Adjust Without Overstepping
3 hours and longer- Ask about workplace needs, not diagnosisParticipants focus conversations on what is affecting work and what practical support may help rather than asking for unnecessary medical or personal details.
- Review adjustments rather than setting and forgettingParticipants treat temporary flexibility, reduced duties or other agreed adjustments as arrangements that can be reviewed.
- Keep privacy appropriately boundedParticipants identify what information genuinely needs to involve HR, occupational health or another internal function and avoid unnecessary disclosure to colleagues.
- Make it safe to say the plan is not workingParticipants practice asking what is becoming difficult and responding constructively when the employee says workload, timing or another part of the return plan needs review.
Build Sustainable Reintegration
Full day only- Rebuild normal role participation graduallyParticipants identify opportunities for the employee to resume meaningful responsibilities, meetings and relationships in a deliberate sequence.
- Support confidence with clear evidenceParticipants use specific feedback about completed work, progress and contribution rather than vague reassurance.
- Keep accountability visibleParticipants maintain clarity about responsibilities and agreed outcomes as capacity increases.
- Know when the plan needs formal reviewParticipants recognize when ongoing difficulty, repeated absence, significant changes in functioning or questions about adjustments require HR, occupational health or another appropriate professional process rather than repeated informal management alone.
