About this session

Allergy-related risk at work can appear in offices, laboratories, healthcare settings, kitchens, manufacturing sites, warehouses, schools, animal facilities, outdoor work and many other environments.

Potential triggers can include foods, latex, flour, enzymes, animal proteins, pollens, some dusts, insect stings and substances capable of causing respiratory or skin sensitization.

Participants learn an important distinction: allergy, sensitization, irritation and intolerance are not interchangeable.

A substance can irritate the airways or skin without causing an allergic response, while repeated exposure to some workplace agents can lead to sensitization so that later exposures trigger symptoms at lower levels.

Training supports recognition and prevention without asking employees or managers to diagnose the cause themselves.

The session then moves upstream into exposure prevention. Substitution, enclosure, ventilation, local extraction, process design, cleaning, maintenance, procurement and suitable PPE may all play a role depending on the hazard.

Employees should not be expected to manage occupational exposure solely through avoidance, medication or personal resilience when the workplace can reduce the exposure itself.

The session also covers supportive workplace planning. Employees should be able to raise allergy-related concerns without having to disclose their full medical history to coworkers.

Where a severe allergic reaction is possible, emergency arrangements should be clear before an incident occurs.

Longer programs build this into a systematic approach covering exposure mapping, occupational-health escalation, health surveillance where appropriate, accommodations, emergency readiness and management of change.

What your people take away

  • Distinguish allergy, sensitization, irritation and intolerance without attempting clinical diagnosis
  • Recognize common workplace exposure pathways involving inhalation, skin contact, food, shared environments and occupational tasks
  • Apply substitution, containment, ventilation, work-design and other stronger controls before relying on personal avoidance or PPE alone
  • Support employees through proportionate communication, workplace adjustments and appropriate medical privacy
  • Recognize concerning allergy-related symptoms and understand when severe reactions require immediate emergency escalation
  • Strengthen occupational-health, surveillance, procurement and management-of-change processes around recurring allergy and sensitization risks

What’s covered

Understand Allergy, Sensitization and Workplace Exposure

Every length
  • Distinguish allergy from irritation and intoleranceAllergy involves an immune response, while irritation, intolerance and other sensitivities can create symptoms through different mechanisms.
  • Understand occupational sensitizationSome workplace substances can sensitize the respiratory system or skin after repeated exposure.
  • Map the different exposure routesPotential allergy-related exposure can occur through inhalation, direct skin contact, contaminated surfaces, food ingestion, splashes, stings or transfer from gloves, clothing and shared equipment.
  • Notice work-related patterns without diagnosing themCoughing, wheezing, chest tightness, nasal symptoms, eye irritation, itching, rash or other symptoms that repeatedly occur around particular tasks or environments may provide useful information.

Prevent Exposure Through Stronger Workplace Controls

90 minutes and longer
  • Remove or substitute the trigger where possibleThe strongest control may be eliminating an unnecessary allergen or sensitizing agent, substituting a safer product or changing the process that creates exposure.
  • Contain or capture airborne exposureEnclosure, local exhaust ventilation, source extraction, isolation and suitable general ventilation can reduce airborne exposure where allergenic or sensitizing material is released during work.
  • Control contact, surfaces and secondary exposureAllergens or sensitizers can spread through contaminated gloves, clothing, tools, benches, shared equipment, dust and waste.
  • Use PPE as the appropriate final layerGloves, protective clothing, eye protection or respiratory protective equipment may be required for some allergy or sensitization hazards, but the protection must match the substance and task.

Support Employees Without Making Them Manage the Risk Alone

3 hours and longer
  • Ask for the information needed — not the full medical storyAn employee may need to explain a trigger, task limitation, emergency arrangement or workplace adjustment, but coworkers and managers generally do not need their complete diagnosis, treatment history or medical records.
  • Build practical workplace adjustmentsDepending on the exposure, appropriate arrangements might involve product substitution, task changes, different equipment, improved extraction, modified cleaning, relocation, changes to storage or other workplace controls.
  • Handle shared spaces, food and events proportionatelyShared kitchens, catered meetings, workplace events, travel and communal areas can create additional allergy-management questions.
  • Plan for known emergency needsWhere an employee has a known risk of severe allergic reaction, appropriate people should understand the workplace emergency arrangements before an incident occurs.

Recognize Deterioration and Build a Reliable Allergy Management System

Full day only
  • Recognize when symptoms need professional reviewRecurring breathing, skin, eye or other symptoms associated with particular work should be reported early and reviewed through the appropriate workplace and healthcare pathway.
  • Recognize a possible severe allergic reactionRapidly developing breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, collapse, marked dizziness or other severe systemic symptoms may indicate a life-threatening allergic reaction.
  • Use health surveillance where the exposure warrants itSome occupational sensitizer exposures may require appropriately designed health surveillance or occupational-health monitoring.
  • Review procurement, process change and recurring signalsNew materials, cleaning products, gloves, laboratory reagents, manufacturing inputs, catering arrangements or work processes can introduce different allergen or sensitization risks.
