Germany: plan to replace the 8-hour day with a weekly limit and require electronic time recording

Takes effect November 2026 to December 2026By WorkblissUpdated October 19, 2026

What’s happening

A Labor Ministry draft would let collective agreements set a weekly instead of a daily working-time limit. It would allow the 11-hour rest period to be shortened only if the agreement adds health protections, and it would require electronic recording of daily working time on the day it is worked. Trust-based working time would still be allowed if documented. Unions oppose the plan.

What to do

Track the bill, and check whether your German time-tracking setup could produce same-day electronic records.
