About this session

Belonging is sometimes treated as a cultural aspiration: something organizations hope employees will feel if the workplace is friendly, inclusive, or socially connected. In practice, belonging is built through repeated everyday signals.

Do people feel respected? Can they contribute without constantly proving that they deserve to be there?

Are their ideas taken seriously? Do they understand how their work matters?

Can they disagree, ask for help, make a mistake, develop, and participate without feeling that acceptance depends on becoming more like everybody else?

Retention is equally easy to oversimplify. Employees rarely stay or leave because of one factor.

A decision to leave may reflect management quality, career opportunity, workload, flexibility, fairness, recognition, pay, role design, trust, life circumstances, team relationships, or several issues accumulating over time.

A high retention rate is not automatically healthy either. Organizations need people to stay for the right reasons, while recognizing that some movement, progression, and voluntary departure are natural parts of working life.

Leaders therefore need to understand the relationship between culture and staying. Belonging does not mean constant harmony, and retention does not mean avoiding difficult accountability.

Employees can experience clear standards, challenging work, honest feedback, and organizational change while still feeling respected and included.

What matters is whether the environment gives people a reasonable basis for trust, contribution, growth, connection, and fair treatment.

Participants examine belonging at team and organizational level, identify the moments where inclusion or exclusion is created, and explore how managers influence the everyday experience of work.

They then connect those cultural conditions with retention by examining stay factors, early signals of disengagement, career and development needs, workload, employee voice, and high-risk transition points.

The session culminates in a practical approach to healthy retention: understanding which people and capabilities matter most, addressing avoidable causes of departure, strengthening manager practices, and using workforce evidence without reducing employees to flight-risk scores.

The objective is not to make people stay. It is to create a workplace worth staying in.

What your people take away

  • Understand belonging as an everyday experience of respect, inclusion, connection, contribution, and acceptance rather than conformity
  • Identify the leadership behaviors, team norms, and organizational conditions that strengthen or weaken belonging
  • Recognize the multiple factors that influence why employees stay, disengage, or decide to leave
  • Use stay conversations, employee voice, development, recognition, and workload insight to address avoidable retention risk earlier
  • Strengthen key employee moments such as onboarding, role changes, career transitions, return from leave, and periods of organizational change
  • Build a healthy retention approach that focuses on valuable employee experience and sustainable commitment rather than trying to keep everyone indefinitely
