About this session
Work generates a continuous stream of potential learning: decisions, conversations, projects, mistakes, successes, difficult customers, changing priorities, feedback and unexpected outcomes.
Yet much of that experience disappears into the next task before anyone extracts what it could teach them.
Reflective practice creates a deliberate pause between experience and future action.
Participants learn to reconstruct what actually happened, distinguish facts from the story they told themselves about it, examine assumptions and emotional reactions, seek useful additional perspectives and identify what the experience suggests about their own behavior or the wider situation.
The session then moves from reflection into expertise.
Participants learn to look for recurring patterns across multiple experiences, convert insights into hypotheses and behavioral experiments, reflect while work is happening as well as afterwards, and build a personal evidence base about what tends to work in different situations.
The goal is not more introspection. It is faster learning from experience and better judgment the next time a similar challenge appears.

What’s covered
Turn Experience Into Something You Can Learn From
Every length- Experience is not the same as learningSimply completing a project or surviving a difficult situation does not guarantee that useful learning has occurred.
- Reconstruct what actually happenedMemory quickly compresses events into a simplified story.
- Separate fact from interpretationStatements such as 'they were not interested', 'I wasn't ready' or 'the client loved the idea' may combine observation with interpretation.
- Choose the experiences worth reflecting onTrying to deeply analyze every working day turns reflection into administrative burden.
Reflect With Structure, Curiosity & Evidence
90 minutes and longer- Move from what → so what → now whatUseful reflection needs enough structure to move beyond simply replaying an event.
- Surface your assumptionsBehavior is often based on beliefs that remain invisible until something goes wrong.
- Bring in other perspectivesPersonal reflection is valuable but necessarily limited to one viewpoint.
- Reflect on success as well as failurePeople naturally analyze problems more closely than good outcomes, which can leave effective behavior poorly understood and difficult to reproduce.
Turn Reflection Into Better Future Action
3 hours and longer- Extract a specific lessonWeak reflections end with conclusions such as 'communicate better', 'prepare more' or 'be more confident'.
- Turn the lesson into a hypothesisOne experience may suggest a useful pattern without proving a universal rule.
- Design a behavioral experimentReflection becomes development when behavior changes.
- Close the loopWithout revisiting the experiment, reflection can become a series of insights with no cumulative learning.
Build Reflection Into Professional Expertise
Full day only- Reflect while the work is happeningExperienced professionals do not only learn afterwards.
- Look for patterns across experiencesExpertise grows when people can distinguish recurring patterns from isolated events.
- Build a decision & learning journalImportant judgements are difficult to evaluate retrospectively because people already know how the story ended.
- Create a reflective practice rhythmReflection becomes sustainable when it is attached to meaningful moments rather than becoming another large task.
