About this session

Process problems are often addressed through immediate solutions: retrain the team, add another approval, introduce a new system or ask people to be more careful. Sometimes those actions help. Sometimes the same problem returns because the process was never properly understood.

Lean Six Sigma provides a disciplined way to investigate and improve existing processes. Lean thinking focuses attention on customer value, flow and unnecessary work.

Six Sigma contributes structured thinking about defects, variation, measurement and process performance.

DMAIC brings these ideas together through five connected phases: Define the problem, Measure current performance, Analyze what is driving the problem, Improve the process and Control the new way of working.

Participants learn to use DMAIC as a reasoning process rather than a template-completion exercise.

They define problems precisely, establish trustworthy baselines, distinguish possible causes from verified causes, design improvements around evidence and create controls proportionate to the process.

The objective is measurable improvement that continues after the project team moves on.

This Workbliss session develops practical DMAIC capability. It should not be represented as an accredited Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt or other formal certification unless a separately configured accredited certification pathway is explicitly included.

What your people take away

  • Understand how Lean, Six Sigma and DMAIC contribute to structured process improvement
  • Define improvement problems around customer, process and organizational outcomes
  • Establish reliable current-state measures before proposing solutions
  • Use evidence to identify and verify root and contributing causes
  • Design and test improvements against meaningful success criteria
  • Build ownership and controls that help improvements remain effective over time

  • Control planning
  • Live Q&A

Covers 2 of 4 parts: The five DMAIC phases and Apply DMAIC to Real Work.

3 hours

3 Hours — DMAIC in Practice

Builds on the 90-minute session, with more time to apply DMAIC to a real or realistic workplace case and to explore the thinking behind it.

  • The five DMAIC phases
  • Apply DMAIC to Real Work
  • The Thinking Behind DMAIC
  • Applied workplace case
  • Live Q&A

Covers 3 of 4 parts: The five DMAIC phases, Apply DMAIC to Real Work and The Thinking Behind DMAIC.

Full day

Full Day — Lean Six Sigma DMAIC Process Improvement Lab

A practical full-day workshop in which participants take a realistic process problem through the full DMAIC methodology, using selected Lean Six Sigma tools to define the issue, establish evidence, analyze causes, design improvements and create a control plan.

  • DMAIC Process Improvement Challenge
  • Problem Statement & Project Charter
  • Voice of the Customer / CTQ
  • SIPOC
  • Current-State Process Mapping
  • Baseline & Data Plan
  • Waste & Variation Review
  • Root Cause Analysis

Also available as a 4-week or 8-week program, for change that lasts. Ask us about it.

What’s covered

The five DMAIC phases

Every length
  • DefineClarify the problem, customer need, scope and improvement objective.
  • MeasureUnderstand how the process currently works and establish a trustworthy performance baseline.
  • AnalyzeIdentify and verify the conditions genuinely driving poor process performance.
  • ImproveDesign, test and implement changes that address the verified causes.
  • ControlSustain the improvement and detect when performance begins to drift.

Apply DMAIC to Real Work

90 minutes and longer
  • Clarify the ProblemDefine the performance gap, customer need, scope, stakeholders and measurable improvement objective.
  • Establish the BaselineMap the existing process and gather reliable evidence showing how it currently performs.
  • Verify the CausesMove beyond plausible explanations and determine which process conditions genuinely contribute to the problem.
  • Test the ImprovementDesign changes connected to the causes, pilot them proportionately and compare performance with the original baseline.
  • Sustain the GainTransfer ownership, establish appropriate controls and monitor whether the improvement continues to hold.

The Thinking Behind DMAIC

3 hours and longer
  • Start With Customer & Process ValueImprovement should connect with something that matters to the customer, user, employee, process or organization rather than simply making an internal metric look better.
  • Understand Before You ImproveDMAIC deliberately separates understanding the problem from choosing the solution so teams do not build an improvement around an explanation that has never been tested.
  • Use Evidence Before AssumptionProcess stories can sound convincing without being correct.
  • Improve the Process, Not the BlameRecurring errors and delays often reflect process design, information, workload, handoffs, systems or controls rather than one individual simply needing to try harder.

Common DMAIC Failure Modes

Full day only
  • Starting With the SolutionBeginning with 'we need a new system', 'we need training' or another preferred intervention and using DMAIC to justify it afterward.
  • Measuring EverythingCollecting large amounts of data without first deciding which measures can actually explain the problem or inform the decision.
  • Treating Possible Causes as ProvenProducing a convincing Fishbone or Five Whys analysis and assuming that the resulting explanations are verified without additional evidence.
  • Optimizing One Step Instead of the ProcessMaking one function faster or more efficient while creating additional waiting, work or risk elsewhere in the end-to-end workflow.
