About this session
Logical thinking is excellent at moving forward from accepted assumptions. The difficulty comes when those assumptions themselves are limiting the solution.
If a team has always framed a problem in the same way, more analysis can sometimes produce increasingly sophisticated versions of the same answer.
Lateral thinking introduces deliberate discontinuity.
Participants learn to identify the dominant idea controlling a conversation, question what has been treated as fixed, reverse familiar relationships, introduce unexpected stimuli, explore apparently unreasonable possibilities and use alternative perspectives to open different routes through the problem.
The process is disciplined rather than random. Participants first widen the possibility space without immediately asking whether every idea is practical.
They then use movement — asking what an unusual idea suggests, what principle it contains, or how it changes the original frame — before bringing analytical judgment back in to develop useful concepts.
The result is greater cognitive flexibility and a repeatable method for escaping habitual thought.
What your people take away
- Recognize dominant ideas and habitual patterns that constrain how a problem is being understood
- Challenge assumptions that have been treated as facts or fixed constraints
- Use reversal, provocation and unexpected stimuli to create new thinking routes
- Generate genuinely different alternatives rather than minor variations of the obvious solution
- Develop apparently impractical ideas by extracting useful principles and possibilities
- Combine lateral exploration with analytical judgment to produce workable solutions

What’s covered
Recognize the Patterns Holding Thinking in Place
Every length- Find the dominant ideaMost problems quickly acquire a dominant frame: the explanation everybody assumes is correct, the solution type everyone expects, or the rule around which the conversation revolves.
- Separate facts from assumptionsStatements such as 'customers want this', 'the process has to work this way', 'there isn't enough time' or 'senior leaders would never approve it' can quietly become constraints without being tested.
- Notice pattern completionExperience helps people recognize patterns quickly, but it can also make them complete an unfamiliar situation using the nearest familiar explanation.
- Interrupt the first answerThe first plausible solution creates an anchor that makes later ideas disproportionately similar to it.
Disrupt Familiar Thinking Deliberately
90 minutes and longer- Challenge the assumptionInstead of asking whether an assumption is reasonable, lateral thinking can temporarily ask what becomes possible if it is removed, inverted or replaced.
- Use reversalReversal deliberately turns a familiar relationship around.
- Create provocationsA provocation is an intentionally unusual statement used to escape existing logic rather than a proposal that must immediately be defended as realistic.
- Introduce an unexpected stimulusWhen thinking repeatedly travels along the same route, an unrelated word, image, industry, object or process can create a new association that would not emerge through normal analysis.
Shift Perspective & Expand the Possibility Space
3 hours and longer- Look through a different lensA challenge can look completely different from the perspective of a customer, frontline employee, competitor, new joiner, regulator, future user or another industry.
- Generate alternatives, not variationsTen ideas built on the same underlying mechanism are not necessarily ten alternatives.
- Change the level of the problemSome problems become easier to rethink when participants zoom out to the wider purpose or zoom in to a specific moment, behavior or friction point.
- Ask 'what else could this be?'Objects, roles, processes and resources often become mentally fixed to their conventional purpose.
Turn Unusual Thinking Into Useful Possibilities
Full day only- Use movement instead of instant judgmentLateral ideas are easily killed by asking 'Would this work?' before asking 'Where could this take us?'
- Extract the principleAn unrealistic idea may contain a valuable mechanism. 'No employees answer customer emails' might reveal opportunities around self-service, peer communities, automation or preventing the questions arising in the first place.
- Combine lateral & analytical thinkingLateral thinking is strongest when it is followed rather than replaced by judgment.
- Build a repeatable lateral thinking habitPattern-breaking is easier when teams use it before they become committed to one answer.
