About this session

Retirement planning in Singapore involves several different age milestones, account structures, and income systems.

A member can contribute to CPF throughout working life, have OA, SA and MediSave balances before age 55, move into a Retirement Account at age 55, become eligible for retirement payouts from age 65, and separately hold an SRS account whose retirement-withdrawal age depends on when the first SRS contribution was made.

This session brings those pieces together. Participants first learn how CPF accounts change at age 55, why the Special Account closes, how the Retirement Account is funded, and what BRS, FRS and ERS mean.

They then explore CPF LIFE, the distinction between statutory retirement age and CPF payout eligibility age, the current payout-start window, plan choices, nominations, and other retirement-review questions without receiving a recommendation about payout timing or plan selection.

The later modules explain SRS as a voluntary scheme that complements CPF rather than replacing it.

Participants learn how contributions, investments, tax characteristics, prescribed retirement age, the 10-year retirement-withdrawal window, early withdrawal and foreigner-specific issues work at a high level.

They finish by combining CPF, SRS and other retirement resources into a Singapore Retirement Review Checklist covering income, longevity, inflation, healthcare, housing, beneficiaries, tax, liquidity, and unresolved specialist questions.

What’s covered

Understand Your CPF Retirement Structure

Every length
  • Map CPF accounts by purpose & ageParticipants distinguish the Ordinary Account, Special Account and MediSave Account before age 55 and learn why the accounts have different permitted uses.
  • Understand what changes at age 55Participants learn that a Retirement Account is created at age 55, with applicable SA and OA savings transferred into it under current retirement-sum rules.
  • Distinguish BRS, FRS & ERSParticipants learn what the Basic, Full and Enhanced Retirement Sums are designed to represent and why BRS and FRS are cohort-linked while ERS changes over time.
  • Keep retirement, housing & healthcare money conceptually separateParticipants learn that CPF serves retirement, housing and healthcare needs through different account structures and rules.

Understand CPF LIFE & Retirement Payouts

90 minutes and longer
  • Separate retirement age from CPF payout eligibility ageParticipants learn that Singapore's statutory retirement age, re-employment age and CPF Payout Eligibility Age are separate concepts.
  • Understand the CPF payout start windowParticipants learn that applicable members can currently start CPF monthly payouts between ages 65 and 70.
  • Compare CPF life plans without picking a winnerParticipants compare the Standard, Basic and Escalating CPF LIFE plans by payout pattern, inflation-related considerations and legacy / bequest questions at a high level.
  • Review nomination & other retirement-income questionsParticipants learn why CPF nomination should be reviewed separately from a will and why remaining CPF savings and applicable CPF LIFE premium balance can follow the nomination framework.

Understand SRS & Additional Retirement Saving

3 hours and longer
  • Understand why SRS is different from CPFParticipants learn that SRS is a voluntary, privately operated retirement savings scheme that complements CPF.
  • Distinguish SRS contribution from SRS investmentParticipants learn that making an SRS contribution places cash into a tax-advantaged retirement framework but does not itself create an investment portfolio.
  • Understand the prescribed retirement ageParticipants learn that the statutory retirement age prevailing when their first SRS contribution was made determines the prescribed retirement age used for normal penalty-free SRS retirement withdrawals.
  • Understand retirement & early withdrawal rulesParticipants learn the current 10-year penalty-free retirement-withdrawal framework, the partial tax treatment of qualifying withdrawals, and the fact that premature withdrawals generally receive less favorable tax and penalty treatment.

Build Your Singapore Retirement Income & Review System

Full day only
  • Bring CPF & SRS into one retirement-income mapParticipants map CPF LIFE or other CPF payouts, SRS, cash savings, insurance / annuity income, investments, property-related income and work as separate potential retirement-income sources.

  • Keep healthcare, housing & liquidity on the same reviewParticipants identify MediSave and healthcare costs, housing, debt, cash reserves, emergency liquidity and family responsibilities as retirement dependencies.
  • Build a repeatable Singapore Retirement ReviewParticipants create a review covering CPF accounts, Retirement Sums, CPF LIFE, nominations, SRS, other retirement assets, income needs, healthcare, housing, beneficiaries, tax and unresolved professional questions.
