About this session

Mexican retirement planning becomes much easier to understand once one misconception is removed: having an AFORE account and belonging to a pension regime are not the same thing.

An employee can have an individual AFORE account while their eventual pension rights are determined under very different IMSS or ISSSTE rules.

This session starts by mapping the complete retirement system.

Participants identify the AFORE that administers an individual account, review statements and contribution information, distinguish SIEFORE investments from the AFORE itself, and learn how beneficiaries and voluntary savings fit into the account.

They then explore how IMSS Régimen 1973 and Régimen 1997 differ conceptually, why ISSSTE Décimo Transitorio and individual-account retirement also need to be separated, and which official institution is responsible for confirming a participant's pension rights.

The later modules move from accumulation toward retirement income. Participants examine Renta Vitalicia, Retiro Programado and Pensión Garantizada where applicable, the long-term effect of partial retirement withdrawals, and the role of additional voluntary AFORE saving.

They then explore Planes Personales de Retiro and other private retirement arrangements as additional resources rather than automatic solutions.

The session finishes with a Mexico Retirement Review Checklist that brings pension regime, AFORE, voluntary savings, private plans, beneficiaries, expected retirement income and unresolved specialist questions into one repeatable review.
