About this session
Retirement planning in Japan becomes clearer once the different layers are separated. National Pension creates the Basic Pension foundation.
Employees covered through work also build earnings-related rights through Employees' Pension Insurance. Some employers add a defined benefit pension, corporate defined contribution pension, retirement allowance, or another long-term benefit.
Employees may also hold iDeCo or other personal retirement assets.
This session starts with the public pension record.
Participants learn the difference between National Pension and Employees' Pension Insurance, understand Category I, II and III insured status, review Nenkin Teikibin and Nenkin Net, identify contribution or coverage gaps, and understand how Old-age Basic Pension and Old-age Employees' Pension fit together.
The later modules examine pension claiming, work after age 65, corporate DB and DC plans, retirement allowance, job changes, pension portability, the risk of automatic transfer after leaving a Corporate DC plan, and iDeCo.
Special attention is given to the 2026 reform timeline because major iDeCo and contribution-limit changes take effect on 1 December 2026.
Participants finish with a Japan Retirement Review Checklist rather than a prescribed pension, contribution, investment, transfer, or claiming strategy.
