About this session
Working across cultures requires more than knowing that differences exist. The difficult moments usually happen when another person's behavior feels completely understandable to them and completely unreasonable to us.
Expectations around hierarchy, trust, time, decision-making, relationships, disagreement, initiative, risk, feedback, and professionalism can all vary across cultural contexts.
Cross-Cultural Intelligence develops the capability to operate effectively inside that uncertainty.
Participants explore four interconnected elements of cultural intelligence: the motivation to engage with difference, knowledge of how cultural patterns can shape behavior, the ability to question and update their own interpretations, and the behavioral flexibility to adapt when the situation requires it.
Rather than memorizing rules about particular countries, participants learn a repeatable process for approaching unfamiliar cultural situations: observe carefully, recognize their own assumptions, develop alternative explanations, ask better questions, adapt deliberately, and learn from what happens next.

What’s covered
Understand Your Cultural Intelligence
Every length- Move beyond cultural awarenessKnowing that cultures differ is useful, but awareness alone does not tell someone what to do when those differences affect a real project, relationship, decision, or team.
- Understand the four CQ capabilitiesParticipants explore four complementary capabilities.
- Identify your cultural defaultsIdeas about good leadership, professionalism, punctuality, initiative, respect, teamwork, or appropriate disagreement often feel like common sense because they are deeply familiar.
- Separate difference from deficiencyPeople can quickly interpret unfamiliar behavior as passive, aggressive, inefficient, disrespectful, indecisive, controlling, or disengaged.
Read Cultural Context More Accurately
90 minutes and longer- Use cultural dimensions as lensesFrameworks around hierarchy, individual and group orientation, uncertainty, context, relationships, and time can help explain why reasonable people approach work differently.
- Notice how status shapes behaviorExpectations around hierarchy can affect who challenges a decision, who speaks first, how initiative is shown, whether managers are questioned publicly, and how authority is communicated.
- Understand different routes to trustSome working relationships build trust primarily through reliability, competence, and successful delivery.
- Make time & uncertainty visibleCultures and organizations differ in their comfort with ambiguity, planning, deadlines, flexibility, risk, and changing direction after work has begun.
Think & Adapt Across Cultural Difference
3 hours and longer- Pause the first interpretationThe first explanation for another person's behavior often reflects our own cultural expectations.
- Ask questions that reveal contextCuriosity becomes useful when it produces better information rather than simply asking people to explain their culture.
- Adapt without becoming inauthenticCultural adaptation does not require copying another person's behavior or abandoning personal values.
- Test & update your assumptionsCultural intelligence improves through experimentation.
Apply Cultural Intelligence to Global Work
Full day only- Build trust across different working stylesDifferent approaches to relationships, reliability, informality, expertise, hierarchy, and communication can all influence how quickly trust develops.
- Adapt decisions & collaborationTeams may differ in expectations around consultation, consensus, senior authority, individual ownership, risk, speed, and when disagreement should be expressed.
- Work through cultural frictionWhen tension emerges, attributing the problem immediately to someone's culture can be just as unhelpful as ignoring cultural difference completely.
- Build cultural learning into the teamStrong multicultural teams do not depend on everybody already understanding every cultural context.
