About this session

Human cognition does not operate in isolation. Conversation, collaboration, shared problem-solving and meaningful relationships regularly challenge us to interpret information, remember context, understand other perspectives and adapt our responses.

Social connection can therefore be an important part of cognitive as well as emotional wellbeing.

This session explores the relationship between social interaction and brain health without suggesting that simply being more social will prevent cognitive decline or guarantee better performance.

Participants examine how different forms of connection can stimulate thinking, broaden perspective, support learning and help regulate stress.

Participants then look at their own social environment and identify where connection is enriching, draining or missing.

The final module helps them build a practical social-cognitive routine that includes purposeful conversation, collaborative thinking and recovery-supportive relationships without demanding constant sociability or ignoring individual preferences for solitude.

  • Use conversation and collaboration as opportunities for cognitive stimulation
  • Recognize how supportive relationships can help regulate stress and support recovery

What’s covered

Understand the Social Brain

Every length
  • See how much thinking happens in conversationParticipants notice how ordinary conversation requires attention, language, memory, interpretation and rapid response.
  • Notice the work of perspective-takingParticipants examine how understanding another person's intention, knowledge or viewpoint requires them to move beyond their own immediate perspective.
  • Distinguish connection from contactParticipants compare meaningful interaction with simply being around or communicating with many people.
  • Map your social-cognitive environmentParticipants identify where their week currently includes stimulating discussion, supportive relationships, routine interaction and solitude.

Use Relationships to Expand Thinking

90 minutes and longer
  • Explain an idea to someone elseParticipants practice explaining a complex idea clearly to another person and notice where the explanation exposes gaps or assumptions in their own thinking.
  • Ask for a different perspectiveParticipants choose a real problem and deliberately ask someone with a different role, experience or viewpoint how they see it.
  • Think together, not just divide the taskParticipants compare collaboration that simply distributes work with collaboration that genuinely combines ideas.
  • Use questions to stretch thinkingParticipants practice questions that challenge assumptions, expose missing information or invite alternative possibilities.

Use Connection to Support Stress Recovery

3 hours and longer
  • Identify who helps you gain perspectiveParticipants identify people who help them see a difficult situation more clearly rather than simply amplifying frustration.
  • Ask for the type of support you needParticipants practice saying whether they need listening, perspective, practical help or distraction.
  • Watch for co-ruminationParticipants notice when repeated discussion is no longer producing insight or action and is instead keeping both people emotionally activated.
  • Use small moments of connectionParticipants identify brief interactions that can create belonging or perspective during demanding days, such as a short conversation, shared break or check-in.

Build Your Social-Cognitive Wellbeing System

Full day only
  • Choose quality over social volumeParticipants identify a small number of relationships or communities that provide meaningful stimulation, learning or support rather than setting a goal to interact with more people simply for the sake of being social.
  • Build variety into your connectionsParticipants consider whether all of their interactions involve people with very similar roles, knowledge or viewpoints and identify opportunities for broader exchange across generations, functions, cultures or areas of expertise.
  • Balance connection with solitudeParticipants recognize that social interaction itself uses cognitive and emotional energy.
  • Create regular cognitive connection cuesParticipants attach purposeful interaction to existing routines, such as discussing an idea with a colleague, learning with someone else or reconnecting with a supportive person.
