About this session

Retirement planning in Ireland now spans several systems.

An employee may build State Pension rights through PRSI, participate in an occupational defined benefit or defined contribution scheme, hold a PRSA, make AVCs, participate in MyFutureFund, or accumulate retirement resources through more than one arrangement over a working life.

This session starts with the State Pension record.

Participants learn how to review a Contribution Statement, distinguish paid and credited contributions, understand the transition toward the Total Contributions Approach, and see why State Pension age, contribution history, caring periods and claim timing are separate questions.

The session explains flexible State Pension (Contributory) claiming between ages 66 and 70 without turning that flexibility into a recommendation to claim earlier or later.

Participants then move into occupational pensions, PRSAs and MyFutureFund.

They distinguish defined benefit from defined contribution arrangements, Standard from non-Standard PRSAs, ordinary scheme contributions from AVCs, and workplace pension saving from the new automatic-enrollment system.

The final stage brings the pieces together through pension preservation, transfers, retirement benefit options, ARFs, annuities, cross-border questions and a practical Ireland Retirement Review Checklist.

What’s covered

Understand Your State Pension & PRSI Record

Every length
  • Start with the PRSI record behind the State PensionParticipants learn that State Pension (Contributory) is built from the relevant Irish social-insurance record rather than from a personal investment account.
  • Distinguish contributory from non-contributory State PensionState Pension (Contributory) is based on qualifying social-insurance history and is not means tested, while State Pension (Non-contributory) is a separate means-tested public payment.
  • Understand the move toward the Total Contributions ApproachParticipants learn why Ireland is progressively replacing the Yearly Average calculation with the Total Contributions Approach and why the relevant transition method depends on the year the pension is claimed.
  • Understand flexible claiming without searching for one best ageEligible people can currently choose a State Pension (Contributory) start date between ages 66 and 70, with additional PRSI and actuarial increases potentially affecting the outcome.

Understand Occupational Pensions, PRSAs & MyFutureFund

90 minutes and longer
  • Distinguish defined benefit from defined contributionParticipants compare occupational defined benefit and defined contribution schemes.
  • Understand PRSAs as personally owned retirement accountsParticipants learn that a PRSA is an individual defined-contribution pension arrangement that can generally move with the individual across employment changes.
  • Place MyFutureFund in the retirement systemParticipants learn that MyFutureFund is Ireland's automatic-enrollment retirement savings system, introduced in 2026 for eligible employees without qualifying supplementary pension coverage through payroll.
  • Know where AVCs & additional pension saving fitParticipants distinguish ordinary scheme contributions from Additional Voluntary Contributions and understand that a PRSA can also be used for AVC purposes in relevant circumstances.

3 hours and longer

  • Compare costs & investment information consistentlyParticipants review charges, investment options, fund objectives, risk and longer-term performance information in DC pensions and PRSAs.
  • Understand preservation before thinking about transferParticipants learn that leaving an employer does not automatically erase occupational pension rights and that qualifying benefits can remain preserved in the former scheme.
